Me and My Girl is about an unapologetically unrefined cockney gentleman named Bill who learns that he is the heir to a royal title and fortune. Bill is forced to decide if he should fit in with high society and lose his Cockney roots and his girlfriend. By staying true to himself, he is able to enrich both groups and reunite his loving family. This story is important because it asks us to accept ourselves, and not allow other people to change our values.
Our lighting goals for the production were to create distinct indoor and outdoor spaces, to emphasize the us vs. them mentality throughout the show. The Cockney world existed outside, and the high-class world existed inside. By the end of the show, we wanted to blend the two spaces to reflect the blending of the family.
To achieve this, I developed a plot with distinct systems that reflected the indoor and outdoor spaces, with an emphasis on the warmth and comfort of the Cockney world, and the cold and unfamiliar high-society world.
